Dec. 7, 2022

Dec. 7, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! Most of us got rain yesterday morning and for most of us, it amounted to about half an inch. Last night the rain stayed to the south and west of Roatan. Utila picked up a quarter of an inch overnight.

Today looks nice, with mostly sunny skies and winds calming to around 10 mph and seas at 2-3 feet (.6 to 1 meter).

Tonight through Friday morning we have an increased chance of scattered showers. Tomorrow winds will be from the east around 15 mph and seas at 4 feet. Starting Friday into the weekend winds will get much calmer and the seas should calm to around 2 feet (.6 meters). Rain chances will be moderate and mostly overnight through the weekend.

We’re starting to track what could be our next norther in a week and a half. Have a great Wednesday!

Dec. 6, 2022

Dec. 6, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! Most of us got a small shower overnight, with most locations reporting less than a tenth of an inch, enough to get the ground wet, but not much more than that.

Satellite image at 7 a.m.

There are some low clouds around and we can’t rule out a stray shower today, but we’ll be mostly sunny with east winds 7-12 mph and seas around 3 feet (1 meter).

Tonight we have a good chance of seeing a shower with east winds 15-20 mph and seas at 4 feet (1.3 meters).
Tomorrow will again be mostly sunny with only a small chance of a shower and east winds 10-15 mph and seas at 3 feet.
Wednesday night into Thursday we have a better chance of scattered showers and continued breezy.
Friday we have scattered showers, but winds and seas might get quite calm Friday into Saturday. Have a great Tuesday!

Dec. 5, 2022

Dec. 5, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! West Bay and West End picked up a quarter of an inch yesterday afternoon. Other locations got lesser amounts.

Today will be mostly sunny with east winds around 10 mph and seas around 3 feet (1 meter).

There is a very small chance of a shower tonight. Tomorrow will also be sunny with east winds 12-17 mph and seas at 4 feet (1.3 meters).

There is a little better chance of a shower Tuesday night, but then Wednesday should also be mostly sunny with winds 10-15 mph and seas around 3-4 feet.

Scattered showers are back for Thursday and Friday. Have a great week!

November 2022 rainfall

Rainfall for November 2022: If you want proof that rain varies on the island, just look at November’s rainfall. West Bay got about 9 inches, while West End picked up 20.25 inches. Midisland, Coral View got 12.17 while on the south side French Harbor got 17.16. The east side monitors were closer to the 13-14 inch mark. We will put Coral View’s 12.17 in the record books. While it might have seemed plenty wet, we were actually well under our normal November rainfall of just over 17 inches.

The 12 inches we got in November would be normal for December. Our weather pattern is starting out pretty moderate when it comes to rain. Most cold fronts have pushed east of the US instead of south this year, causing most of our energy to come from the northeast, giving us scattered showers but not torrential rains like we often get in rainy season.

Dec. 4, 2022

Dec. 4, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! Since the rain early yesterday, the island has been mostly dry, except for some small midday showers on the West side yesterday and we picked up .03 of an inch early this morning in Jonesville Point.

At 7 a.m. we can see on the satellite some clouds and showers heading our way, so watch out for an increased chance of rain around mid-morning. We will have scattered showers into the afternoon, but also plenty of sun. Winds will calm a bit from what we’ve been having, north/northeast 10-15 mph but seas will continue around 4 feet (1.3 meters).

Tonight through Tuesday will be mostly dry. Winds will be around 10 mph during the day and 15 mph at night and seas will be around 3 feet (1 meter).

Tuesday night into Wednesday the chance of overnight rain goes up and rain chances are better Thursday and Friday of next week. Have a great Sunday!

Dec. 3, 2022

Satellite image at 7 a.m.

Dec. 3, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! This morning most of us have picked up around half an inch of rain between midnight and 7 a.m. Yesterday most of us also got half an inch, more or less, meaning that for the last 24 hours, an inch of rain has been common on Roatan and Utila.

As you can see on the satellite, most of the rain has moved to our southwest, though Utila is still likely dealing with some showers at 7 a.m. Today looks to be mostly sunny. There may be a stray shower, but the middle of the day looks mostly dry. Winds will be from the east/northeast at 15-20 mph and seas remain high, at 4-5 feet (1.3 to 1.6 meters).

Tonight into tomorrow the rain chance goes back up as winds go down a little to 10-15 mph and seas to 3-4 feet (1-1.3 meters).

Monday and Tuesday look pretty dry with winds 10-15 mph and seas around 3 feet. Winds and rain chances go back up on Wednesday. Have a great weekend!

Dec. 2, 2022

Dec. 2, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! Yesterday Utila picked up 1.5 inches of rain after getting 1.6 the day before. They have picked up .08 of an inch between midnight and 6 a.m. already. West Bay and West End picked up small amounts yesterday evening, with Sandy Bay picking up a quarter of an inch and Coral View and French Harbor around half an inch. Here on Jonesville Point we got a third of an inch.

Today should be a lot like yesterday, with mixed clouds and sun and occasional showers, perhaps a little more numerous this afternoon than yesterday.

Satellite image at 6:20 a.m.

As you see in this morning’s satellite image, there are storms to our northeast, and with a strong southwesterly flow in the atmosphere it is pushing those storms toward us, and will increase our rain chances early this afternoon. It is also pushing up our surf to 4-5 feet (1.3 to 1.6 meters) especially on the southern and eastern sides of the island. This high surf will last through the weekend, so be careful on the seas.

This mix of sun, clouds, scattered showers and high surf will last through the weekend. Monday and Tuesday the rain chances look lower. Have a great Friday!

Dec. 1, 2022

Radar at 7:30 a.m.

Dec. 1, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! While the big island stayed dry overnight, Utila picked up 2.3 inches and was still getting rain as shown in the radar from around 7:30 a.m. This is the kind of weather we’re in right now. If you get under the wrong cloud you will get a lot of rain, but if you don’t you will stay completely dry. The forecast through the weekend can be summed up in a few words: Sun and clouds, occasional downpours, choppy seas.

In the satellite image we see some clouds that could hold some showers east of Guanaja. If they hold together they would be over Guanaja around 8 a.m. and Roatan mid- to late-morning. So we will have about a 40 percent chance of seeing a shower today. Otherwise it will be partly cloudy with seas starting out around 4 feet on the south side this morning and calming to 2-3 feet and winds starting out around 15 mph and calming to 7-10 mph by afternoon.

Tonight we will have a 60 percent chance of rain with winds around 15 mph.

Friday should continue partly cloudy with about a 40 percent chance of a scattered shower. Winds start picking up Friday evening and Friday night into Saturday look windy, with east/northeast winds 15-20 mph and seas at around 5 feet (1.6 meters). Friday night into Saturday we still have a good chance of seeing showers but we will also have periods of sun. Sunday looks a bit calmer with winds around 10 mph but seas still 3-4 feet with scattered showers.

Monday and Tuesday the rain chance will be lower. Have a great Thursday!

Nov. 30, 2022

Nov. 30, 2022: Good morning Roatan! We’ve had a dry day yesterday and last night and that should continue today, with mostly clear skies. Winds will be from the east 12-17 mph and seas at 2-3 feet (.6 to 1 meter).

Tonight and early tomorrow morning there will be a 50 percent chance of rain. Tomorrow will be partly cloudy with about a 30 percent chance of a shower. Winds will be easterly at 10-15 mph and seas at 2 feet.

Thursday night into Friday there is also a decent chance of rain. The models differ on how much rain we will get through the weekend.

The European model thinks about an inch and a half through Sunday night.

The GFS is more generous, with about 3 inches.

Both models give us good chances of rain at night through this period, but the GFS gives us higher chances of rain during the daytime hours. In either case, expect to catch some rain through the weekend, especially at night and in the mornings. The bigger story is that the seas will be quite choppy, with 4 foot waves coming from the northeast near the island and 5 foot waves and perhaps a bit more further out to sea Saturday and Sunday. If you are going on a ferry, be sure and pack the motion sickness pills. Have a great Wednesday!

Nov. 29, 2022

Nov. 29, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! We start the day bright and sunny. Today, tonight and tomorrow should continue clear and windy, with east winds 15-20 mph and seas 3-4 feet (1-1.3 meters).

Tomorrow night into Thursday morning we will have about a 50 percent chance of a shower.

Thursday and Friday should be a little calmer, with winds 7-12 mph and seas around 2 feet (.6 meters).

Thursday night into the weekend our chances of rain will be better and our winds will start turning around to the northeast as a cold front moves to our northeast. It looks like this front may cause some heavy seas this weekend, around 5 feet (1.6 meters) and a bit more as you go further out to sea, even though it won’t be extremely windy, probably around 15 mph. There will be scattered showers throughout the weekend. Have a great Tuesday!
