May 12, 2022

May 12, 2022: Good morning Roatan! West End got 1.4 inches yesterday and West Bay got .7. In the last 24 hours ending 7 a.m., Jonesville Point has only gotten .05. Most locations got a quarter of an inch or so, but a few locations got no measurable rain. Jimmy Andrade in Camp Bay reported some good showers this morning.

Today we will have calm conditions, partly cloudy skies and a chance of rain, especially as we get toward evening. Starting tomorrow we have a series of clear and calm days that will run through Tuesday. Wednesday the winds should pick up again. Have a great Thursday!

May 11, 2022

May 11, 2022: Good morning Roatan! Here on Jonesville Point we picked up a quarter of an inch of rain a little after midnight. We were the only recording station on the island that reported rain overnight. If you got some, let me know in comments.

Today and tomorrow will be days with calm winds and partly cloudy skies and about a 40 percent chance of rain. Any rain that comes shouldn’t last too long and rain totals shouldn’t be much over half an inch, but you never know with a tropical downpour. Friday through Tuesday should be days with clear skies and little to no wind. Seas through this whole period should be 1 foot or less (.3 meters) so great days for boating, diving and snorkeling. Bad days to be inside a house with no air conditioning. Have a great Wednesday!

May 10, 2022

May 10, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! We had a pretty windy night last night and will have one more day in the wind before calm conditions take over, and with it the heat.

Today will be sunny and hot with east winds 15-20 mph and seas at 3 feet (1 meter).

Tomorrow winds calm to 5-10 mph and seas 1-2 feet (.3 to .6 meters). The chance of rain will be mostly in the evening.

Our best chance of rain comes tomorrow night into Thursday, though even then it is probably only 50-50.

Thursday there will be a 40 percent chance of rain, mostly in the morning, with winds 2-7 mph and seas at 1 feet (.3 meters).

Friday through the weekend, conditions will be quite calm, but with no rain in the forecast. This is great for boating but not good if you want to cool off. As I have often said, heat on the island is not so much about actual temperature as it is about cloud cover and wind. Tomorrow through the weekend we won’t have much wind and even Wednesday and Thursday will be partly cloudy and Friday through Sunday will be quite sunny. In other words, the end of this week is going to be a hot one. Stay cool and have a great Tuesday!

May 8, 2022

May 8, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! With no rain and almost no wind, it has been super hot on the island. Temperatures are right around 90 (32C), but the humidity makes it feel well over 100 (38C).

Today should continue hot and calm, but tomorrow and especially Tuesday should be windier. Wednesday and Thursday we get a chance of rain, probably 30 percent on Wednesday and 50 percent on Thursday. Right now Friday into next weekend looks dry and calm (and hot). Have a great Sunday!

May 6, 2022

May 6, 2022: Good (late) morning, Roatan! No rain the last 24 hours as of 11 a.m. on the island. We are still windy and we will have one more windy day and night before things calm down a bit.

Today we will have partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies (and hot) with winds from the east 15-20 mph and 3 foot (1 meter) seas during the day and 20-30 mph winds and 5 foot (1.6 meter) seas overnight.

Tomorrow winds calm a bit to 7-12 mph and 2 foot (.6 meter) seas during the day and 12-17 mph winds and 3 foot (1 meter) seas at night. Sunday will be very similar to Saturday. The next decent chance of rain (probably around 40 percent) is Wednesday and Thursday.

Have a great Friday.

May 5, 2022

May 5, 2022: Good morning Roatan. We wake up to partly cloudy skies but no rain recorded on the island in the last 24 hours ending at 8 a.m. It has been windy. I got up to 29 mph on Jonesville Point last night.

Today and tomorrow we will continue with winds 15-17 mph during the day and 22-27 mph at night with seas 3 feet (1 meter) during the day and up to 5 feet (1.6 meters) at night.

This weekend winds should calm, with daytime winds from the east 8-13 mph and nighttime winds 17-22 mph. As we get into next week, we expect chances of overnight showers, though small, to be greater than they are this week. Have a great Thursday!

May 4, 2022

May 4, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! The only rain recorded the last 24 hours on the island was .02 of an inch around 1:30 p.m. at Casa Blanca.

As you can see in the 7 a.m. satellite image there are some clouds around, especially east of the island, so we continue to keep only a very slight chance of a shower. We will continue with windy conditions, with east winds around 15 mph during the day and gusting to 25 mph at night and seas 3 feet (1 meter) during the day and 4 feet at night. Our general pattern is getting back into a time period when a pop up shower is possible any day or night. This week the chance is very low, maybe 10 percent, but next week it should be higher, around 30 percent each day.

Have a great Tuesday!

May 3, 2022

May 3, 2022: Good morning Roatan! Seems that most of the island got a shower around midnight that gave us between a tenth and a third of an inch.

This morning there are some clouds to our east, so I will keep a small chance of a stray shower in for the morning, otherwise partly cloudy in the morning and mostly sunny in the afternoon with east winds 12-17 mph gusting to 25 tonight.

Tuesday through Friday should be even gustier, with daytime winds around 20 mph and nighttime winds pushing 30 mph. Seas will be 3 feet (1 meter) during the day and up to 5 feet (1.6 meters) at night. Have a great Tuesday!

May 2, 2022

May 2, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! We got .08 of an inch overnight and Politilly picked up a little over a quarter of an inch. Utila got .04 yesterday morning. No other online rain gauges picked up any rain. If you got some, make me know in comments.

There are some clouds off to our east, but nothing likely to bring rain today. Partly cloudy skies this morning will give way to mostly sunny skies this afternoon. Winds will be from the east around 17 mph and seas around 3 feet (1 meter.).

Tonight we will have a small chance for a shower.

The rest of the week will follow a similar pattern, with some night being perhaps a bit windier. Have a great week!

Rainfall for April 2022

Rainfall for April 2022. We are putting 2.98 inches in the books for April. The west side tended to get a bit less, more toward 2 inches. The east side got a bit more, with some locations getting over 3.5 inches. It was rainy by April standards. The month averages an inch and a half. But we were far from the record of 5.88 inches in 2018.

I received a message asking if there was a climatic explanation for having more than average rainfall. We are nearing the end of a La Nina cycle and I looked back at other La Nina years and could find no strong correlation between La Ninas and rain in April on Roatan.

May is usually another dry month, averaging nearly 3 inches. The first week looks to start out dry, so that is in keeping with the time of year. They always say dry weather is good for ripening mangoes, so lets hope we get a good crop this year!
