Radar at 7 a.m. Saturday April 9.

April 9, 2022: Good morning Roatan. If you’re like me, you woke up at 5:45 to bright sunshine and wondered if the forecast had fooled us. As you can see from the radar image at 7 a.m., most of the rain is to our north and west, but the computers still say most of us will get wet today. Even as I write this, we’re getting a shower on Jonesville Point. We will have a chance of rain throughout the day, but totals should generally be higher the further west you go. The clouds will keep the temperatures down in the 70s to around 80 (24-26C)

Sunday looks like a nice day, with partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 80s (28C), a bit cooler than we’ve been experiencing.

Monday morning there is a chance of a shower, but after that we are back to strong east winds, sunny skies and heat back into the upper 80s. Have a great weekend!

Satellite from 7 a.m. Friday, April 8

April 8, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! It has been quite hazy and, of course, quite hot. But relief is in sight. As you can see in the satellite image, a front is on the way that promises rain late tonight and tomorrow. Today we will a hazy mix of sun and clouds. Winds will shift from the east to the northeast this afternoon around 15 mph. Chances of rain start after midnight tonight and continue through the day tomorrow. Saturday the winds may pick up to 20 mph from the northeast and make for some choppy seas and make it feel quite cool, compared to our recent heat. Temperatures should be in the mid 70s (22-24C).

Sunday we will have partly to mostly cloudy skies with a very low rain chance, but rain should come back Sunday night into Monday morning before leaving for good.

After Monday morning, we will quickly return to TRW (Typical Roatan Weather) with 20 mph east winds, clear skies and temperatures in the upper 80s (30-31C) for the rest of the holiday week. Have a great Friday!

April 6, 2022

April 6, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! Sorry for missing yesterday, but I don’t think I missed much except a whole lot of sun and heat. The same is in store today. Most temperatures are showing at right around 90 (32C). As I’ve mentioned before, temperature on Roatan is mostly a function of clouds and when there aren’t many, it will get hot.

Winds should be around 15 mph today with 3 foot seas (1 meter) and 25 mph tonight with 4 foot seas (1.3 meters).

Tomorrow winds should be a tad calmer as our front approaches, (12 mph during the day and about 17 mph at night).

Friday we will have increasing clouds and a small chance of rain.

Friday night winds turn to the northeast. Over the weekend we will have decent chances of rain, a lot of clouds and northeast winds at 10-15 mph. Rain chances continue through Monday morning. Have a great Wednesday!

April 4, 2022

April 4, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! There is a system over El Salvador that is throwing a few high clouds our way, but mostly we will stay sunny and windy, with daytime winds 17-22 mph and seas at 3 feet (1 meter) and nighttime winds 22-27 mph and seas at 5 feet (1.6 meters). Those conditions will continue through Thursday.

Friday winds should moderate in advance of a cold front, which will turn winds to the northeast and give us chances of rain Friday night through Saturday and into Sunday morning. Have a great week!

April 3, 2022

April 3, 2022: Good morning, Roatan. Today is the day that may be slightly less windy that the rest of the week, with east winds at 15 mph and seas at 2 (.6 meters) feet and nighttime winds at 20 mph and seas at 4 feet (1.3 meters).

Tomorrow we will be back to 20 mph winds during the day and up to 30 mph at night. Saturday still looks promising for some rain. Have a great Sunday!

Rainfall for March 2022

Rainfall for March 2022. This March is officially the rainiest March since our records start in 1994. We recorded 9.96 inches, which is three times the prior average of 3.33 inches. The addition of this month actually raised the average March rainfall to 3.56 inches. Looking ahead, April is traditionally the driest month of the year, with an average of 1.44 inches. In 2011 and 2020 we recorded absolutely no rain in April on the island. We should get some next weekend, so our trend of wetter than average weather should continue.

Predicted wind for 2 a.m. Tuesday, April 5.

April 2, 2022: Good morning Roatan! Since our weather is pretty boring, I thought I would talk about one thing that is happening in our weather — wind! Sometimes we will give a forecast for 20 mph winds and someone will comment that it seems much calmer where they are. Occasionally we get the opposite, someone who says it seems gustier than the forecast. I am posting the wind forecast for 2 a.m. Tuesday. It’s supposed to be pretty windy, but you will notice that it will be windier on the east side of the island than on the west side. That is because landforms protect against wind, and when we have a southeast wind (the most common kind here) the east side has less protection from the mainland. When wind has nothing but sea to blow over, it can get very windy. Also, if your location is protected by a large hill, you can stay quite calm. Where we lived on Lucy Point, we were protected from the east wind, so it was hardly ever more than 10 mph at our location, unless we were experiencing a west wind. When we give a windy forecast, we give it for unprotected areas, generally near the sea. Official forecasts are usually for wind speeds at a height of 10 meters.

That being said, today looks pretty windy, with east winds 20-25 mph, but tomorrow looks a bit calmer, with east winds 12-17 mph. As always with east winds, they will be calmer on the north and west sides of the island, and closer to the prediction on the south and east ends of the island. Next week looks sunny and windy, with a chance of rain coming next weekend. Have a great weekend.

April 1, 2022

April 1, 2022: Welcome to April. Things are already getting hot. The airport got up 88 (31C) degrees yesterday and Utila has gotten to 90 (32C) degrees today. Winds have been up, especially on the south side. My new weather station will be on the island Wednesday, so I will be able to get accurate wind speeds on the south side, but the airport got up to 25 mph last night and is registering 15 mph through the middle of the day. Those conditions will continue through the week. The long range forecast still shows rain arriving Saturday evening the 9th. We’ll keep an eye on it.

March 31, 2022

March 31, 2022: Good morning, Roatan. Abundant sunshine continues. Winds will be from the east/southeast 10-15 through the middle of the day with 3 foot (1 meter) waves and gusty at night 20-25 mph and 5 foot waves (1.6 meters). As we go through the weekend, winds will calm a bit, especially on Sunday when east/northeast winds will be 5-10 mph. Have a great Thursday!

March 30, 2022

March 30, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! Goodbye rain, hello wind! Daytime winds at 20 mph and nighttime winds to 30 mph with seas at 3 feet (1 meter) during the day and up to 5 feet (1.6 meters) at night. Skies will be partly cloudy today, but should be sunny the rest of the week into the weekend. Next rain chance looks to be around April 9. Have a great Wednesday!
