Good morning Bay Islands. Our photo of the day comes from Andrea DeMille and this spooky sunset was taken from the Thai Elephant in West End. Our smoke and dust is continuing to give us spooky skies. I feel like I’m living on Tatooine. Speaking of spooky skies, last night was the strongest aurora borealisContinue reading “May 11, 2024”

Good morning Bay Islands. This morning’s photo of the day comes from Louise Ciarleglio and shows some nice cumulus clouds near Gibson Bight. Unfortunately we don’t have too many cumulus clouds around today, just cirrus clouds and dusty haze. If you would like to enter a photo in the contest for $50 credit at HangoverContinue reading “May 8, 2024”
Difference between El Niño and La Niña for Roatan hurricane chances
I thought we might take a look at the difference between hurricanes in La Niña years and El Niño years. Last year was a major La Niña year and, just as this chart shows, we didn’t have to deal with a lot of hurricanes in the Caribbean. You will notice La Niña brings an increaseContinue reading “Difference between El Niño and La Niña for Roatan hurricane chances”

Good morning Bay Islands. Our photo of the day is from Glory Cone and shows a young man entering the water to hunt lionfish in Lucy Point. I have made the decision to do the photo contest on May 1, because doing it on the last day of the month confused some people. The topContinue reading “April 30, 2024”
Effect of La Niña on hurricanes on Roatan and the Bay Islands
One of the big questions people want answered is “How likely is my vacation to the Bay Islands to be interrupted by a hurricane?” The answer is usually not very likely, but let’s take a look at how we might be impacted by La Niña, which is expected to cool the Pacific waters by lateContinue reading “Effect of La Niña on hurricanes on Roatan and the Bay Islands”

Good morning Bay Islands. Our photo of the day comes from John Atkins in Mangrove Bight, but not the Mangrove Bight on Guanaja. Evidently we have one on Roatan too, between Gibson Bight and West End. We have some shower activity on satellite This beautiful sound comes from Jimmy Andrade, near his Las La Sirena deContinue reading “April 26, 2024”

Good morning Bay Islands. Our full moon photo today was taken by Phil Sikora at Carib Bight below Juticalpa. We had a question in yesterday’s comments about the sargassum. We will take a stab at guessing when it gets less stinky. Let’s start with our satellite photo. We see some popcorn clouds at 6:50 a.m., especially aroundContinue reading “April 25, 2024”
Why Roatan has to worry about hurricanes a lot less than Florida
I found this graphic online that gives the hurricane danger of various countries on a scale of 0 to 10. You will notice that the countries with the highest risk are to our northeast. That is because the strongest hurricanes tend to form off the west coast of Africa and move in a west/northwesterly direction.Continue reading “Why Roatan has to worry about hurricanes a lot less than Florida”
Why is it hotter in Roatan than my weather app says?
I get occasional questions about the temperature forecast. I generally don’t do a temp forecast because the temperature is generally the same, with the exception of a few days each year where we have northers. But one thing that has an impact on how hot it is where you are, is whether you are onContinue reading “Why is it hotter in Roatan than my weather app says?”
El Niño/La Niña effect on the Bay Islands Part 1
Now that our boring forecast is out of the way, let’s talk about what the months ahead are going to be like. Let’s start with what our weather is normally. If you check out my Q&A here at https://roatanweather.org/frequently-asked-questions-about-roatans-weather/ you’ll learn that I usually don’t do temperature forecasts, because temperature here is almost always the same,Continue reading “El Niño/La Niña effect on the Bay Islands Part 1”
