Dec. 30, 2021

Dec. 30, 2021: Good morning, Roatan! Our winds here on Jonesville Point are down ever so slightly, into the 15-20 mph range instead of the 22-27 mph range. Looks like we’ll stay in that range, though Saturday looks a bit winder, back in the 22-27 mph range. Surf stays up in the 3-5 foot range, especially on the south side. Clouds will increast on Sunday and chances of showers will be good on Monday and Tuesday. Have a great Thursday!

Dec. 25, 2021

Dec. 25, 2021: Good morning, Roatan! We got a nice, cool rain last night, and most locations on the island recorded between a quarter and a third of an inch of rain.
Today we have mostly fair-weather clouds overhead, so we will have only the slightest chance of a passing shower, with winds from the east/northeast at 7-12 mph and seas at 2 feet (.6 meters). Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with east winds 5-10 mph and seas at 1-2 feet (.3 to .6 meters). Monday morning there will be a small chance of showers, and that will be the best chance of showers we will have for the entire week. Next week will be TRW (Typical Roatan Weather) with brisk east winds, 3 foot seas and only a small chance of a passing shower.

This is a day a lot of folks are thinking about Jesus, so I thought I would share my favorite weather-related passage about the Christ. It comes from Mark 4:37-41: Now a great violent windstorm broke out, and the waves kept crashing into the boat, so that the boat was close to being swamped. … With that he got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea: “Hush! Be quiet!” And the wind abated, and a great calm set in. … And they said to one another: “Who really is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him.”

I cannot wait for God’s Kingdom to come and God’s will to be done on Earth. Then, Jesus will be God’s King and chief meteorologist. No more deadly storms like Eta and Iota. No more worries about climate change. Just perfect conditions as far as the eye can see. That will be the best weather forecast.

Dec. 24, 2021

Dec. 24, 2021: Many of us got a chilly rain yesterday around 3:30 p.m. but totals were around .02 of an inch.
Today will be partly cloudy with calm winds and fairly calm seas. Tonight we will have a decent chance at showers. Tomorrow, after some morning showers, we should have a nice day with winds turning to the east at 5-10 mph. Sunday should also be nice with east winds 7-12 mph. Seas through the holiday weekend should be 1-3 feet (.3 to 1 meter). Sunday night into Monday morning we will have another decent chance of rain. Starting Monday and especially on Tuesday the easterly trade winds return bringing us TRW (Typical Roatan Weather) with east winds 15-20 mph, seas around 3 feet, heavier on the south side and a very low chance of a passing shower.

Dec. 23, 2021

Dec. 23, 2021: Good morning, Roatan! What a beautiful morning. One location in Sandy Bay recorded a reading of 67 (19c) this morning, West End had a low of 69 (20c) and we got down to 71 (21c) here on Jonesville Point. Seas are quite calm here on the south side.
Today winds will be from the northwest at 5-10 mph and seas in the 2-foot range (.6 meters) especially on the north side. There’s a very slight chance of a shower tonight, but otherwise partly cloudy. Tomorrow will be partly cloudy and continued calm. There is a small chance of a shower overnight Friday night into Saturday morning. I’d put the chance at 40 percent right now, but that should clear out and the holiday should be very nice, with fairly calm winds and seas and mostly sunny skies. The extended forecast also looks dry. Enjoy!

Dec. 22, 2021

Dec. 22, 2021: Good morning, Roatan! Most of us got a little rain early this morning as the front came through. The north wind also blew pretty strongly. Coral View picked up a gust above 30 mph right behind the front. Right now we are dealing with a few clouds on the back side of the front, but those should fade away and the rest of the day should be mostly sunny.
Winds should calm as the day goes along but it will still be breezy, in the 12-20 mph range. Wave action on the north side will stay in the 4-foot range (1.3 meters). Tomorrow looks gorgeous, with sunny skies and temperatures a degree or two cooler than we are used to. Also the air should feel lighter and a little less humid. Winds will be from the north/northwest at 3-7 mph and seas on the northside at 2 feet (.6 meters). Friday will be nice as well, though in the evening through Saturday morning there will be a chance of rain as a wave of moisture passes through. Other than that, the holiday weekend looks beautiful. Enjoy!

Dec. 21, 2021

Dec. 21, 2021: Good morning, Roatan! Welcome to the first day of winter (got your coat on?) also known as the shortest day of the year. This day makes us appreciate our island home. Not only is it warm today (more on that later), but our day is 11 hours 9 minutes, much longer than the southern US (Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles) which are only 10 hours of daylight, or the northern US (New York, Detroit, Portland) which are right at 9 hours. If your Canadian from someplace like Calgary or Vancouver you only have around 8 hours of sunlight.
Today the winds turn to the west and then the northwest at 10-15 mph. Rain chances increast as we get into the evening hours. The best chance of heavy rain will be between midnight and 8 a.m. tomorrow. Some squalls could be heavy, but after the front passes we should clear out, so tomorrow may actually be a nice day, except for north winds at 15-20 mph, making for seas at 4-5 feet on the north side, though winds and seas will calm a little toward evening. Thursday and Friday look absolutely gorgeous. Winds on Thursday will be from the north 5-10 and seas 2-3 feet, but Friday winds will be very light and seas 1-2 feet. Saturday we will have a chance of a morning shower, but otherwise quite nice for the holiady. Sunday there is perhaps a little better chance of a shower, right now 30-40 percent. Have a great Tuesday!

Dec. 20, 2021

Dec. 20, 2021: This morning we have some high clouds, but mostly sunny skies across our islands. If you are from North America, we are about to experience a cold front similar to the ones we are used to, where the rain is mostly concentrated right along the front and therefore the rain event is pretty short-lived.
Today we will have mostly sunny skies with east winds 10-15 mph and seas at 2 feet (.6 meters). Tomorrow we will have increasing clouds and scattered showers with winds turning to the west then northwest at 10-15 mph and seas at 2 feet. Wednesday the front should come through between 6 a.m. and noon and rain could be heavy along the front. As it passes, we will have north winds in the 20-25 mph range and seas on the north side could get up to 6 feet (2 meters) so be careful on the seas. After Wednesday the weather looks gorgeous. We will likely be in for an extended period of dry weather with winds from the north/northeast 5-10 mph and seas at 2-3 feet. We may even feel a little chill in the air for the holiday weekend with lows in the lower 70s and perhaps some upper 60s. Enjoy!

Dec. 19, 2021

Dec. 19, 2021: Good morning, Roatan from Jonesville Point. Our weather station is not online yet until we get internet service up and running, but I can tell you this location will give us a good measure of the true speed of those east winds off the sea. In Lucy Point we were protected from the east winds, but here we get to enjoy their cooling power in full. Our winds this morning have consistently been in the 20 mph range.

Today will be sunny and clear like yesterday with east/southeast winds 15-20 mph and seas at 3 feet (1 meter) especially on the southside.

Tomorrow we will have a small chance of a morning shower, but otherwise mostly sunny with winds a little lower, around 10-15 mph and seas at 2 feet (.6 meters).

Tuesday we will have increasing clouds and increasing rain chances with the approach of our cold front. Winds will turn to the west, then the northwest at 7-12 mph. Tuesday night and Wednesday morning should be the best chance of rain for the week as the cold front passes through. This should give us some of the strongest north winds we’ve had here for a while, around 17-22 mph, so the surf on the north side should really be up, perhaps in the 5-6 foot (1.6-2 meter) range.

I strongly suspect Thursday morning and Friday morning we may get temperatures in the upper 60s. This sets up the holiday weekend to be one of the nicest we’ve had on the island in awhile. The forecast model you see here runs through midnight Saturday into Sunday. Enjoy!

Dec. 16, 2021

Dec. 16, 2021: Good evening, Roatan. Sorry for the late update. If you watch us on Wunderground you know that the Lucy Point station is offline. It will reappear as the Jonesville Point station. Hopefully this weekend if I can get internet up and running. Most of the island got between 1 and 2 inches yesterday. Today has been fairly nice.Tomorrow will be like today, with a chance of a morning shower. Saturday there is a low chance of a morning shower, maybe 30 percent and Sunday is even lower, maybe 10 percent. Around Thursday of next week it looks like we will get a cold front that will actually pass through, giving us another shot of cool air and perhaps some nights under 70 degrees for the following weekend. Have a great Thursday!
