Feb. 5, 2022

Feb. 5, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! We awake to bright sunny skies with a few clouds. Clouds should increase this afternoon and there is a decent chance of rain this evening and overnight tonight. As you can see in the forecast map, the best chance of rain will be between midnight and 6 a.m. tomorrow. Winds today will be from the north 5-10 mph and seas at 2 feet.

The rain chance will continue through tomorrow morning, and north winds around 10 mph will continue through the day, giving us 2 foot (.6 meter) seas, especially on the north side.

Monday looks dry and calm, with winds light and variable and seas 1-2 feet (.3 to .6 meters).

Tuesday we will have a very small chance of an early morning shower with west winds 5-10 mph.

Rain chances get better toward the end of next week, especially next weekend.

Have a great weekend!

Feb. 4, 2022

Feb. 4, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! I start out with an image of the snowpack in the US. You will notice how far south in Texas the snowstorm reached, even getting into northern Mexico. I post this because this same system is going to stall out just to our north, but very briefly — Saturday night and early Sunday morning — we should get a cool north breeze from these winds. I still don’t think it will be quite as cold as last weekend, but we could be down in the low 70s (22-23C) during the day and around 70 (21C) Sunday morning.

Today winds should get a bit calmer, to around 10-15 mph, mostly from the east but the direction may vary.

Tomorrow our winds will turn to the north, but will be very light. Best rain chance tomorrow is in the afternoon and overnight. Sunday there is a good chance of rain, especially in the morning. We may have a brief period where the north winds get up around 10-15 mph, but we shouldn’t have the strong winds we had last weekend. Seas on the north side should be around two feet.

Monday looks dry, but after that we will have small daily rain chances that get better toward the end of the week. Winds should be fairly calm next week as well. Have a great Friday!

Feb. 3, 2022

Feb. 3, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! We had quite a windy overnight with a peak gust of 31 mph. Seas look to be about 4 feet (1.3 meters) on the south side this morning.

Today will continue windy and clear with winds 20-25 mph and seas 3-4 feet (1-1.3 meters). Tomorrow after a windy morning, winds should calm a bit in the afternoon to 12-17 mph, with seas down to 2 feet (.6 meters).

Saturday we have a decent chance of rain with much calmer winds. Winds will be out of the north at 7-12 mph and seas down to 1-2 feet (.3 to .6 meters) mostly on the north side. Sunday the chance of rain is mostly in the morning.

Next week, Monday looks dry, but Tuesday through the rest of the week there will be small chances of showers mostly in the morning and winds through the week will be much calmer than this week. Have a great Thursday!

Feb. 2, 2022

Feb. 2, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! In the U.S. they call this Groundhog Day. The official groundhog, Punxsutawny Phil, saw his shadow so, as lore goes, the US gets six more weeks of winter. The idea is that if it is cloudy, the spring rains have come early, but of course whether it is cloudy on one morning or not has nothing to do with the weather, but it also is a lot of fun. Here we are seeing our shadow because skies are clear. Our lows are warmer, in the mid-70s. Back to TRW (Typical Roatan Weather).

Today winds should be a little calmer, from the east at 10 mph. Seas stay at 3 feet (1 meter) during the day. Tonight winds pick up to 20-25 mph and seas to 4 feet (1.3 meters). Those windy conditions continue through tomorrow. Winds should calm a little Friday into the 15 mph range. Saturday and Sunday are our next good chances of rain as a cold front gets close but stalls just to our north, giving us cloudy skies, rain chances and mild northerly breezes. Next week looks like a week where we will have 30 percent chances of rain most days. Have a great Wednesday!

Rain totals for January 2022

Rain totals for January 2022: We had 8 inches for the record book and that number was pretty even across the island. That was below our average of 11.19 inches. January is generally the last month of the wet season. We transition into the dry season in February with an average of 5.23 inches. I’ve heard some asking whether our current La Niña conditions will affect our weather. I looked back at La Niña years and couldn’t see a strong difference from average, though the La Niña year of 2016 stands out when we recorded a whopping 25.15 inches of rain in February (what happened there?) Last year we also had quite a wet February with 16.82 inches.

Feb. 1, 2022

Feb. 1, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! We had another cool morning, though for most of us not as cool as yesterday. Today the sun will be out and we will warm up.
Today will be breezy, with east winds 17-22 mph. Tomorrow should be a little calmer, with east winds 7-12 mph, though winds will pick up to the 20 mph range Wednesday night. Thursday will be in the 15 mph range and, again, windier at night. Seas on the southside at 3 feet (1 meter) through Friday. Chance of rain returns this weekend. Have a great Tuesday!

Jan. 31, 2022

Jan. 31, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! I’m sitting here at 7:30 a.m. doing the weather in my sweater. Most of us got down to 67 (19.4 C), just one degree away from Roatan’s all-time low of 66 (18.8 C). Most of us have gotten between .1 and .2 of an inch since midnight, but West End got over half an inch since midnight as of 7:30 a.m.
Winds are fairly calm this morning, but as the day goes on they should turn to the east and get up to 20 mph. We will keep a chance of a shower around with mostly cloudy skies for the morning, but we should finally clear out this afternoon.

The period Tuesday through Friday should be mostly sunny with no serious chance of rain. Tuesday during the day we should have brisk east winds and seas at 3 feet on the south side. Wednesday through Friday winds should be a bit calmer during the day, around 10-15 mph and speeding up in the evening and at night to 20 mph, all from the east.

Next weekend rain chances return, but it isn’t a norther like we had this weekend, just increased moisture. Have a great week!

Jan. 30, 2022

Jan. 30, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! I have a question. What starts in Greenland and brings us rain and winds 3,700 miles (6,000 km) here in Roatan! It is the massive storm that brought a blizzard to New England. As you can see in the satellite, the cold front coming down from it gave us anywhere between an inch and a quarter and two and a half inches of rain (Utila was the winner at 2.67 inches) and gave us a peak gust of 47 mph at Coral View. We also got down to 67 degrees (19.4 C) in some locations.

Today we should have mostly cloudy skies with some peaks of sunshine. There will continue to be a chance of rain, especially in the morning hours. Winds will calm into the 12-17 mph range and seas on the northside in the 3 foot (1 meter) range. Rain today should be fairly light. Tonight winds calm to 10 mph and shift to the northeast.

Tomorrow we will have morning clouds and a small chance of a morning shower. Winds will shift to the east at 12-17 mph, rising to 20 mph by nightfall. Seas will be 3 feet (1 meter) on the southside.Next week looks mostly dry with east winds 10-15 during the day and gusting in the evening and overnight.

Moisture returns next weekend, though probably not as much as we’ve had this weekend. Have a great Sunday!

Jan. 29, 2022

Jan. 29, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! At 8 a.m. the sea on the southside is almost dead calm. But as you can tell in the wind map shown here, the wind is coming. It is about 130 miles north of us as of 8 a.m. and should begin to arrive around noon. After 12 we will be dealing with brisk north winds around 20-25 mph. Also there is rain around, with the potential of an inch or more. Seas on the north side will be especially treacherous, perhaps around 7 feet (a little over 2 meters). I would definitely stay off the waters this afternoon and overnight.

Tomorrow the winds will start calming to 15-20 mph and seas should start subsiding, but still quite wavy, especially in the morning. We will have light rain showers possible through the day tomorrow.

Monday we quickly get back to TRW (Typical Roatan Weather) with mostly sunny skies, easterly trade winds 15-20 mph and seas at 3 feet (1 meter) mostly on the south side. These conditions will continue through next week. Have a great weekend and stay safe!

Jan. 28, 2022

Jan. 28, 2022: Good morning, Roatan! Most of us got a nice rain in the early morning hours. It ranged from about a quarter inch in Utila and on the west side to about .05 of an inch here on the east side.
Today we should have mostly sunny skies with light east winds and seas around 1 foot (.3 meters). I’m going to add in a very small chance of a scattered shower today.

You have probably heard of the nor’easter that is going to explode off the coast of New England. This wind map shows how that low pressure system is the engine that pushes our north winds through this Saturday. The heaviest rain will be right along the front, which should pass through around noon or perhaps a little afternoon. Winds will build through the morning, but by evening we will have sustained north winds 25-30 mph and seas around 5 feet (1.3 meters) on the northside. Be VERY careful out on the water and stay off if possible. Behind a strong front like this, clouds often build in and light, chilly rainfall develops. That will be possible Sunday morning, as winds fall to around 17-22 mph and seas will be 3-4 feet (1-1.3 meters).

Monday things will be back to normal with east winds 15-20 mph and seas 2-3 feet, mostly on the south side. Next week looks mostly dry until the weekend.

Have a great Friday!
