Good morning Bay Islands. Our photo of the day is a photo of the night looking toward Jonesville, Oakridge and Calabash from Alex Fleig. It is appropriate because our nighttimes are about to get windier with the return of trade winds.

On satellite this morning we can see a few popcorn clouds that have brought a few showers, especially for Utila and Guanaja. We will keep a small chance of rain through the morning and will continue to have scattered showers overnights and early mornings and mostly dry middays and afternoons this week.
Wind and Galaxy Wave forecast: This morning we wake up to northeast winds around 10 mph and seas around 3 feet. They should calm as the day goes on to light and variable winds and seas around 2 feet.
Tomorrow begins the return of trade winds, with daytime east winds around 12-20 mph and seas 3 feet and nighttime winds 17-25 mph and seas 4 feet, especially southside.

This is probably a good time to discuss trade winds. They are our dominant winds most of the year. We’ve had a lot of northers (cold fronts) coming down from North America that have disrupted our trade winds, so it’s been awhile since the trade winds were dominant, but we are going back into the time of the year when most of our winds will be from the east. Because of the heat near the equator, air tend to rise, while at the subtropical zone it cools and tends to fall. This gives the tropics what is known as a “Hadley cell” and keeps our dominant winds from the east/northeast. It is the reason why the south side tends to be wavier most of the year and the north side of our islands calmer.
